This project aims to design an innovative product for bicycle riders, filling a gap in the international market in the cycling community. Our target is to combine new technological advances with a smart algorithm and develop a device that will be essential for a very active, motivated and well spending community. More specifically, we plan to develop a smart tool for the competitive cyclists, professional and hobbyists, which will complement their equipment they use trying to perform at the optimal level and ride at the maximum average speed they can.
Our product, the Smart Cyclo, will be consisted from wireless inclination sensors and a mobile application. The sensors will be placed in predefined positions on the riders and they will track the position of the bicycle riders’ head, upper back and lower back and will provide the application with real data about their position during the ride. Our product will be able to estimate the posture of the rider, to connect to other available devices of the rider and collect other useful data (e.g. heart rate, cadence, cycling power, etc.). Another sensor will be on the bicycle, giving the ability to combine the different posture of the rider with the inclination of the bike, i.e. if the rider at that moment is riding an uphill, a downhill or a flat course.
The device will be accompanied with a mobile application that will show real time the rider’s current posture correlated with other collected data (e.g. the inclination of the road). An important innovative characteristic of the product will be the smart algorithm that will be embedded in the application. It will be able to predict the potential speed of the rider based on the all available sensory information and provide feedback to the user for changes in their posture for optimal performance when they are out of their best aerodynamic position. This provided, the riders will have the ability to ride smarter, meaning that they can change their posture and see exactly how this will affect their performance.
